Microsoft, the company Bill Gates co-founded in 1975 with childhood friend Paul Allen, is the company he left last week, in exchange of more time with his philanthropic organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which also happens to be the largest charitable company in the world.
A short emotional speech was given by Gates, with Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer at his side. "There won't be a day in my life when I won't be thinking about Microsoft, the great things that we're doing and wanting to help," said Gates while wiping away a tear. Ballmer reminded the audience of the dream Gates had ever since he founded Microsoft, of having a PC in every house. "You don't get it. You don't get it. We are going to put a computer on every desk and in every home" said Steve Ballmer, quoting Gates.
The speech was delivered by Bill Gates to about 800 Microsoft employees in his last day at Microsoft, after a 6-month farewell tour throughout the world. His involvement with the company is now restricted to being a non-executive part-time chairman.
In a recent TV interview, Gates said the deal with Yahoo! is now unlikely, and that it's up to Ballmer now to decide in what else to invest. |
