Bamboo DesktopThe CEO of Dell, Michael Dell previewed the company's smallest desktop PC and also the most energy efficient. The form-factor is 81% smaller and uses about 70% less power than the average desktop PC. The materials it is built from are mostly recycled and the case is made out of bamboo. Two laptops, 11 and 12 inches in size are also partially covered in bamboo, and Dell will have them generally available starting in June.

The bamboo desktop also comes with a bamboo covered LCD screen, but Dell did not specify a date when these will become available to consumers.

The environmentally friendly devices were previewed as part of an Earth Day conference in Pasadena, California. Recently Dell has also announced it plans to partner with ReGeneration - a global movement sustaining the world's natural environment - to become the "greenest" technology company in the world.

Dell has also recently announced it's plannign to increase the number of laptops offered by 50% this year, and it will close its 140 retail stores in favor of distributing products to the major outlets, such as Staples and Wal-Mart.

All is well and good, but I fail to see how cutting more bamboo trees is helping our environment.

Bamboo tends to decompose better than plastic.

Not only does it decompose better than plastic but it grows fast. It is actually the fastest growing plant known on earth.

So a new bamboo tree can be planted every time one is cut down and be grown in a much shorter time than traditional timber.

Bamboo can grow as fast as 4 feet in 24 hours in the right conditions.
