AMD PhenomHaving recently failed in front of Intel, AMD is trying to make up for falling behind in 2007 by releasing two new processors earlier than expected. One is Phenom X3 8000, a triple-core processor attempting to target a market that wants something better than the dual-core, but can't take full advantage of a quad-core. With one additional core, the processor is expected to perform about 30% better in multi-threaded applications.

The Phenom X4 9100e is a green quad-core processor, with the clock running at only 25 watts in normal operation mode, but when additional power is needed it switches to a maximum of 65 watts, compared to the 90 to 125 watts used by most quad-core CPUs today. Dell and HP could build small form-factor desktops labeled Green based on these processors, a market that they've recently shown interest in.

But does the low consumption of the CPU really make a difference considering the PSU will still eat an average of 400W? I'm no expert, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the PSU will continue consuming the same amount.

Seasonic has a PSU the also throttles.
