This is a CDMA mobile phone. As you may already know, CDMA is a rather new technology, for more information read this.
A somewhat revolutionary technology, one of the most important aspects is the mobile internet, you can connect your cell phone to your laptop anytime, anywhere and reach speeds of 153.6 kbps and soon enough you'll be able to reach 3.09 Mbps .
I bought this phone from my local CDMA operator - ZAPP (Telemobil).
A few words about ZAPP
This operator is here since 2001. It only has postpaid packages, divided into two parts: voice packages and data packages. The voice packages are mainly dedicated for those who use their phone mostly for talking, while the data packages are mostly for internet browsing.
The prices are resonable for Zapp-to-other calls, and with some postpaid packages the Zapp-to-Zapp calls are incredibly cheap. This is really useful for corporations where all the employees use Zapp. For example, with a monthly fee of $10 you get 500 minutes / month inside the network, and $0.10/minute inside the network after you finish the 500 minutes. Outside the network you pay $0.19/minute and for internet the cost is $0.04/minute. These prices are valid today, September 09, 2004.
Another interesting thing from Zapp is the Zapp portal available at www.zappmobile.ro. After you buy a postpaid Zapp phone you can become a Zapper by registering an account here. Using your account you can send SMS for free to any other Zapp mobile phone, you can also configure which items you want to be displayed on the Zapp portal on your mobile phone.
There are more features available at this portal, but two of them are really useful:
ZappMail
When registering you can have an email address @zappmobile.ro. Nothing extraordinary about this. But what's really useful is that every time you get an email here, an SMS will be sent to your phone containing the From and Subject fields. For free. Of course, you can filter using rules, which messages you want to be notified off, and which you don't.
Calendar
New phones usually have a calendar function, where you can set your tasks and get notified at the due date. Still, it's difficult to write all your tasks using the small keyboard of a cell phone. Well, the Zapp portal has something really useful that replaces this. It's an online calendar where you can post daily, weekly, monthly or one time tasks. When the task reaches its due date, you can get notified by email to your @zappmobile.ro address, but what's more important, by SMS! For free.

Giga Z510 450MHz CDMA
I got this phone for $59. What can I say? As far as I know, this phone is only commercialized in Russia and Romania, so I didn't expect a phone with so many features and so well built.
The design of this phone is tremendous. I said in my blog it ain't so fancy... well I changed my mind, it's really fancy, but in a good way .
Z510 is really, really small (83x43x20 mm), if you take off the antenna it has the size of a Zippo lighter. The weight? 78 grams, you don't even feel it.
Still, regardless of the small sizes and lite weight, the Li-Ion battery has a stand-by life of 215 hours and talk time of 120 hours. You can view more technical details on the Zapp page . Worth mentioning are the polyphonic ring tones, vibrations and the address book which holds 200 entries (each with 3 phone numbers: Home, Office, Mobile and 1 email address) and voice dialing, and voice memo.
It has dual display, the exterior display shows the current time, the battery state, the signal strenght and the name/number of the caller when you get a phone call. Also it shows a small envelope when you get an SMS.
Besides, when you get a call or SMS the led above the display flashes in all sort of colors (red, blue, green, white...). What's even stranger is that you can choose the colors from the configuration menu .
Along with the phone and battery, in the package you get the charger (of course), the User Manual available in english and romanian, the Warranty Card, another antenna and a Hand Strap. I also got a Horizontal Leather Carry Case as a gift from Zapp.
The backlight of the exterior display is blue. The color of the (big) interior display is some sort of combination between green and blue, which is really nice, and the backlight of the keyboard is a combination of green and yellow.
The only know problem with this terminal is the signal strenght. It's also because CDMA terminals must have a very powerful antenna unlike GSM terminals which can have an internal antenna and still a good signal.
