George Smoot: The design of the universe

http://www.ted.com At Serious Play 2008, astrophysicist George Smoot shows stunning new images from deep-space surveys, and prods us to ponder how the cosmos -- with its giant webs of dark matter and mysterious gaping voids -- got built this way.

Astronaut demos drinking coffee in space

Presented by http://collectSPACE.com -- The Source for Space History and Artifacts.

When Dr. Don Pettit lived aboard the International Space Station in 2002, he became known for his "Saturday Morning Science" sessions, during which he would demonstrate really cool, simple microgravity experiments.

Earlier this month, Pettit returned to space, this time as member of space shuttle Endeavour's crew on a mission to upgrade the outpost. After 10 days of hard work, the STS-126 crew got some time off Sunday morning and Pettit took the opportunity to film a special episode of Saturday, err, Sunday Morning Science.

In his video, which he later narrated for Mission Control, Dr. Pettit demonstrated his take on a zero-gravity coffee cup...

Lost toolbag visible orbiting the Earth

This is a live shot of the lost tool bag dropped by astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper during a recent Space Shuttle mission.

This was taken from an amateur astronomer's backyard telescope, and was also visible to the naked eye. The tool bag is the bright white spot that moves right to left in a slightly diagonal trajectory across the shot.

Jet Pack Man successfully crosses Royal Gorge with jet pack

CANON CITY - A man, powered only by a jet pack, successfully traveled 1,500 feet across the Royal Gorge on Monday.

Eric Scott used a hydrogen-peroxide powered jet pack to cross the Royal Gorge near Canon City on Monday, pushing the outer limits of a technology long ago abandoned by the military.

According to a spokesperson for Scott, he completed the flight in 21 seconds. The jet pack itself only contained 30-seconds-worth of fuel.

The Royal Gorge, cut by the Arkansas River in southern Colorado, is more than 1,100 feet deep. The Royal Gorge Bridge that spans it was the site of a deadly stunt in October 2003 when Dwain Weston, 30, apparently miscalculated a parachute jump while wearing a "wing suit" and hit a railing on the bridge and fell to his death.

NASA Test-Fires Next-Gen Ejector Seat

To get the crew away from the launch rocket in case of an emergency, the Launch Abort System motor delivers half a million pounds of thrust; by design, it burns through more than half of its fuel in just three seconds, which will mean the astronauts in the escape vehicle will have to endure G-force of several times a standard Shuttle launch.
